Your complete guide to TV audio streaming with TE102 hearing aids. This FAQ answers common questions about connecting your hearing aids to your television using the TV Companion device.
The TV Companion is designed specifically for TE102 hearing aids to stream TV audio directly to your ears. Whether you want to watch TV without disturbing others or need clearer sound, this guide will help you get started.
Getting Started
It depends on your TV's capabilities:
- If your TV supports Bluetooth: You don't need a TV Companion! Connect your hearing aids directly to the TV via Bluetooth.
- If your TV doesn't support Bluetooth: You'll need a TV Companion. Connect it to your TV with a cable, and it will wirelessly transmit TV audio to your hearing aids.
- Alternative: You can also wear your hearing aids while watching TV without any special connection—the aids will amplify the TV's built-in speakers.
This depends on your TV's audio output settings. Most TVs stop external audio when connected to Bluetooth headphones or a TV Companion.
If you want to watch together:
- Check your TV's audio settings for options like "Simultaneous Audio Output" or "TV Speaker + Audio Device"
- If your TV doesn't support simultaneous output, enable the TV Companion's microphone mode—it will pick up the TV's external sound and transmit it to your hearing aids
Connection Options
The TV Companion supports 4 input types:
- MIC (Microphone): Built-in microphone picks up TV external sound
- Digital Coaxial RCA: Digital audio connection
- Optical (TOSLINK): Digital audio connection
- LINE IN (3.5mm TRS): Analog audio connection
Press the M button to switch between input modes. The green indicator light shows which mode is active. Default mode is MIC when powered on.
Connect via Coaxial RCA, Optical, or 3.5mm TRS cable
The TV Companion is compatible with most TVs. To confirm, check if your TV has any of these ports:
- Digital Coaxial RCA port (usually orange or black)
- Optical (TOSLINK) port (usually labeled "Digital Audio Out" or "Optical")
- 3.5mm headphone jack or RCA audio output
If your TV has any of these connections, the TV Companion will work with it.
Power & Controls
Power On:
- Connect the Type-C power cable
- Power indicator shows red
- Press and hold the "◎" power button
- Indicator turns blue when powered on
Power Off:
- Press and hold the "◎" power button again
- Indicator turns red when powered off
Volume Control
Important: Volume control depends on which input you're using. Each input type works differently!
Analog signal - Two ways to adjust:
- Use TV Companion's +/- buttons
- Use TV remote or TV volume buttons (LINE IN syncs with TV volume)
Digital signal - Usually only one way:
- Use TV Companion's +/- buttons
- TV remote typically can't control digital output volume
- Some TVs have "Digital Audio Output Volume" in settings
Digital signal - Similar to Optical:
- Use TV Companion's +/- buttons
- Some TV boxes support coaxial output volume control
Built-in microphone - Volume not adjustable:
- Picks up TV external sound automatically
- Improve by adjusting TV speaker volume
- Position TV Companion closer to TV for better pickup
Understanding Volume When Connected
When connected, there are two types of sound you'll hear:
The actual TV program audio
How to adjust:
- Direct Bluetooth: Use TV/phone volume buttons only
- Via TV Companion: Use TV volume OR TV Companion +/- buttons
Surrounding sounds and conversations
How to adjust:
- Direct Bluetooth: Use hearing aid buttons or app (when TV is not playing)
- Via TV Companion: Turn off TV Companion first, then adjust
Note: When the TV Companion is powered on, it takes exclusive control of the audio channel. To adjust environmental sound volume, you must turn off the TV Companion first. You'll hear a "beep" sound when the connection is released.
Compatibility
The TV Companion is designed specifically for TE102 hearing aids. While it may work with other brands that support the Auracast protocol, we cannot guarantee the experience or performance.
For best results: Use with TE102 hearing aids only.
